Strategies for Managing Job Stress
Saturday, December 30, 2006

by Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D.

While many of the methods of preventing job stress need to be developed and supported by the organization, there are things that workers can do to help you better manage job stress.

Here are 10 tips for dealing with the stress from your job:
- Put it in perspective.

Jobs are disposable. Your friends, families, and health are not. If your employer expects too much of you, and it's starting to take its toll on you, start looking for a new job/new employer.
- Modify your job situation.

If you really like your employer, but the job has become too stressful (or too boring), ask about tailoring your job to your skills. And if you got promoted into a more stressful position that you just are not able to handle, ask about a lateral transfer -- or even a transfer back to your old job (if that's what you want).
- Get time away.

If you feel the stress building, take a break. Walk away from the situation, perhaps walking around the block, sitting on a park bench, taking in a little meditative time. Exercise does wonders for the psyche. But even just finding a quiet place and listening to your iPod can reduce stress.
- Fight through the clutter.

Taking the time to organization your desk or workspace can help ease the sense of losing control that comes from too much clutter. Keeping a to-do list -- and then crossing things off it -- also helps.
- Talk it out.

Sometimes the best stress-reducer is simply sharing your stress with someone close to you. The act of talking it out – and getting support and empathy from someone else -- is often an excellent way of blowing of steam and reducing stress. Have a support system of trusted people. - Cultivate allies at work.

Just knowing you have one or more co-workers who are willing to assist you in times of stress will reduce your stress level. Just remember to reciprocate and help them when they are in need.
- Find humor in the situation.

When you – or the people around you -- start taking things too seriously, find a way to break through with laughter. Share a joke or funny story.
- Have realistic expectations.

While Americans are working longer hours, we can still only fit so much work into one day. Having unrealistic expectations for what you can accomplish sets you up for failure -- and increased stress.
- Nobody is perfect.

If you are one of those types that obsess over every detail and micromanage to make sure "everything is perfect," you need to stop. Change your motto to performing your best, and leave perfection to the gods.
- Maintain a positive attitude (and avoid those without one).

Negativism sucks the energy and motivation out of any situation, so avoid it whenever possible. Instead, develop a positive attitude -- and learn to reward yourself for little accomplishments (even if no one else does).

Final Thoughts Okay, so it's a cliché, but your health is everything. You need to take care of yourself, and no job, customer, or boss is worth putting yourself at risk. Find a way out through one or more of our 10 strategies. Take control of your situation -- and fix it -- and you will have better mental and physical health, as well as better relationships with the people around you.

Viruses and Worms
Friday, December 29, 2006
Source : http//surfthenetsafely.com

It seems to be inherent in human nature that any activity involving large numbers of people will include some who behave in a harmful, anti-social way. Thus on the Internet there is a constant threat from malicious software or "malware." Two common types of malware are "viruses" and "worms."

What a virus is
A virus is a self-replicating program that spreads by inserting copies of itself into programs or documents that already exist on a computer. The name comes from an analogy with biological viruses. These cannot reproduce by themselves but make use of the functions of infected cells to spread. Similarly, a computer virus makes use of the executable code in legitimate programs to carry out its purposes. A virus may be designed to be destructive to a system or to be a prank. In either case, the virus will rapidly reproduce itself until the system may be overwhelmed. Viruses spread to other systems when infected programs are copied to another machine. Documents with executable code like Word macros can also be vectors of infection. A very common method of spreading viruses is by attachments to email . Today a variant of a virus known as a worm is more often used.

What a worm is
Viruses and worms are often lumped together in the single category of virus but there is technical distinction. A worm differs from a virus in that it contains all the code it needs to carry out its purposes and does not depend on using other programs. Most recent instances of malware have been worms, spread primarily by email. Worms are designed to replicate rapidly and to use the Internet or other networks to spread with great facility. They may contain code to damage or erase files or may carry other malicious payloads. On a number of occasions, large numbers of computer systems have been brought down by worms. In addition to the damage from whatever payload they carry, the sheer number of worm copies can bring systems to a halt.
A very common method of spreading is by use of any email addresses on an infected computer. The worm searches address books, temporary Internet caches and other possible sources of email addresses. The worm then mails out random infected fake messages. It may use the addresses it finds not only as recipients but also may spoof mail to show them as senders. It may also combine random pieces of addresses into new fake addresses. All the messages will contain an attachment that is infected. None of this activity may be known by the owner of the infected machine and may go on for weeks or months. A single infected machine can send out thousands of worm-carrying messages.

Anti-virus programs
Most people know that anti-virus software is a necessity and most computers come with some form of anti-virus program already installed. (Note that anti-virus is a catchall term that refers to a variety of malware.) All the major programs check email as well as scanning your system. However, new viruses appear every day and anti-virus programs are only as good as their database or definitions of viruses. A program can't recognize a new virus unless it has been kept up to date. Anti-virus programs contain update features and these are automatic in the newer major programs. However, the big vendors like Symantec and McAfee no longer give unlimited free updates but start to charge after some initial period ranging from 3 months to 1 year. Very often people do not subscribe to the new updates and let their protection lapse. This leaves the computer open to any new virus that comes along. Personally, I am not keen on having to pay $20 or more per year to Symantec either but all things considered it is a relatively small operating cost. (Actually, it may be better to periodically buy a whole new version of whatever anti-virus program you use. I have often found rebate offers that make the new program cheaper than the update subscription.) An alternative is one of the free programs like Grisoft AVG. In the past, Symantec's Norton has always seemed to get much better reviews for efficacy against infection than the freebies but a recent review by the magazine PC World indicates that there are several free programs that now provide acceptable levels of protection. PC World also has a download site. A description of using the program is here. Tech Suppor Alert gives a critique of the various free programs. One way or another, however, it is essential to use an updated anti-virus program.

A Safe Job Search, Avoid Online Fraud and Scam
Thursday, December 28, 2006
First : Money-Laundering and Reshipping Scamsby John RossheimMonster Senior Contributing Writer

Job seekers would be wise to remember the expression, "dirty money always seeks the path of least resistance," as they conduct their searches in cyberspace, a low-friction employment and personal information marketplace.
When organized criminals and two-bit scammers seek to move stolen money and goods and steal from their unwitting accomplices, Internet job sites are an increasingly popular vehicle, says Saskia Rietbroek, executive director of the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists in Miami.
Monster and other job sites are combating fraud in all its forms. But money laundering and reshipping scams earn special attention, because they may actually make job seekers who fall for them criminals.
Despite job boards monitoring postings, seekers must still know how to protect themselves. This can be daunting; even some government agencies hesitate to advise consumers on how to cope with these ever-morphing scams. "We're not prepared to discuss where we are with this issue," says a spokesperson for the US Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
Where the Scams Are
Job seekers must be familiar with the Internet media scammers most frequently use to snare accomplices and victims. Some scam pitches appear as job-board postings. Other scammers send their intended victims an unsolicited, often grammatically wobbly email. An example: "We ve seen your resume on the [major job site], and we ve decided to offer you the position in our company." Sometimes scammers use a technique called spoofing. This scam can make an email containing a link to a fraudulent posting look like it comes from a well-known job site.
Money-Laundering Scams
Internet money laundering "is just a huge problem," says Susan Grant, director of Internet Fraud Watch at the National Consumers League in Washington, DC. "In fake-check scams, people are losing several thousands of dollars at a pop."
Money launderers often create job postings that say they're recruiting American citizens to "process payments" or "transfer funds," because as foreign nationals, they can't do it themselves. Their communications sometimes contain broken grammar but may include well-written prose from legitimate employers' postings.
If a job seeker responds to a fraudulent ad, the scammer will usually write back immediately, saying that the seeker is the perfect candidate and offering a job. Then the scammer usually requests the victim's bank account number or other personal information. "Nobody legitimate would hire you to use your personal bank account to process these things," says Grant.
If victims cooperate, they will use their personal bank accounts to move stolen or bad checks, planning to keep a percentage as their pay on the scammers' instructions. If the scam involves legitimate funds, the victims are never able to hold onto them. In fact, money-laundering victims may be liable to their own banks for depositing the scammer's rubber checks.
"Almost always, the money the victims are transferring is stolen, and therefore, the victims are committing theft," writes Pam Dixon in a report for World Privacy Forum.
And remember: "If any reasonable person would have asked questions and you didn't, you could go to prison for 20 years," Rietbroek says.
Reshipping Fraud
Reshipping, or postal forwarding, scam victims are typically offered an at-home job that involves repackaging stolen goods -- frequently consumer electronics -- and forwarding them, often outside the United States. Scammers ask victims to shell out their own shipping charges, and pay reimbursement and compensation with a fake check.
In addition to seeing their own paychecks bounce, those who fall for reshipping scams may be liable for shipping charges and even the cost of goods purchased online with stolen credit cards.
How can the victims be criminally liable? For starters, they handled goods that were stolen and followed scammers' instructions to lie on US Customs Service forms if they forwarded packages abroad.
If You Get Involved
What if you believe your personal information has been stolen or you're involved in an illegal money-laundering or reshipping scam? Close bank and credit card accounts that may be compromised, periodically order your own credit report and report your suspicions to law enforcement and the job site the scammers used. If any of your own acts or omissions could have broken the law, seek legal counsel.

Take This Quiz
Tuesday, December 26, 2006

Source : Unknown
You don't actually have to take the quiz. Just read straight through, and you'll get the point, an awesome one. .....
Take this quiz:
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world. 2. Name the last five Grammy Award winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss Universe contest.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners. How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel, appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
6. Name half a dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you. Easier?
The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care. Pass this on to those people who have made a difference in your life.

Frog Story
Sunday, December 24, 2006
Source : Unknown

"The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will." -- Vince Lombardi

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods and two of them fell into a deep pit. All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all of their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, "Did you not hear us?" The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time. This story teaches two lessons:
There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through the day.
A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill them. Be careful of what you say.
Speak life to those who cross your path. The power of words....it is sometimes hard to understand that an encouraging word can go such a long way. Anyone can speak words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in difficult times. Special is the individual who will take the time to encourage another. Be special to others.

Motivating Yourself To Take Action Daily

Daily action towards a goal is the fastest way to achieve your goal. As you take daily action you see the results of that action fairly quickly if not immediately. Visible results which are clear and undeniable are huge motivators.
If you stick to a diet plan every day, you will soon see and feel the results. You will be able to put your socks on more easily. You will be able to get out of that chair quickly without flailing about in the air to create extra lift off!
This will encourage you to continue the diet plan. But if you take a day off every now and again, results will arrive much more slowly and even not at all and you may start thinking that the diet is not working and you may give up altogether.
However, taking daily action is still not that easy. How can we make it easier? That is what this article is about. Jim Rohn argues that success is just a few easy disciplines practised daily. However if those disciplines were that easy why don't more people practise them?
Let's make them even easier. We will then need only a small amount of motivation to take daily action towards our goals
If one of your goals is to lose weight, avoid temptation. Don't have any biscuits or junk food in the house or, failing that, have only a few of each. If some forbidden food or drink is easily accessible, it will draw you irresistibly towards it or it will exhaust your nervous energy as you struggle to resist its attraction.
Again this is easier said than done. Go a step further and don't make such frequent visits to the supermarket or shopping centre or shop which is full of tempting products. If necessary order the essentials from your milk man and just visit one or two shops that are not full of other tempting offers.
Or order everything you need on the internet from those local shops that have a website you can order from. There may be a delivery charge but your overall order should cost less since you will not have bought the forbidden items.
Have the necessary tools readily available to achieve your goals. If one of your goals is to walk more often, have your walking shoes at the door ready to go. If you have difficulty bending over, you may need a long shoe horn to help you get the shoes on. Have it available near the shoes! Make going for a walk as easy as possible.
If you plan to stretch, have a stretching machine on your bedroom floor and sit in it every day. You may still not use it but at least it will be available.
If you want to do push ups make sure you have enough clear space in your bedroom so that you can perform them as soon as you get up in the morning. Make sure the carpet is clean enough to lie down on! Make sure you lie down on the floor every morning. You may still not do that push up but you will have made doing a push up as easy as possible! If necessary, do just one push up. The number will soon rise if you keep up the daily effort.
Space is a key factor in making daily action easier. When I was practising nunchaku regularly, I had the fluorescent lighting in my house placed at the front of the ceilings in at least two rooms so that I could practise inside without hitting the lights.
I had a gym built near my house. I made sure that an iron bar was put in near the ceiling of the gym so that I could hang from it like a gorilla and attempt chin ups without having to find a suitable tree branch!
Make full use of the washroom or lavatory or toilet or whatever you prefer to call it. While you are sitting there waiting for nature to take its course read part of a book or those notes you wanted to memorise.
Clear your house of clutter so that you have room to practise your dancing or kicking or yoga or walking meditation. A cluttered house does not lend itself to daily disciplines and actions. Clutter in the house also means clutter in the mind. It also means accidents. I have just tripped over some steps in my bedroom which is far too cluttered. Fortunately I landed on the bed!
Have fewer choices available. If you plan to read 20 books, make sure you keep only the first two or three in your study. This will help you to focus on and finish them and then 'archive' them into another room.
If you don't do this kind of limitation of your choices you will be like the fox that told the cat that it had a hundred ways of escaping the hounds. When the dogs suddenly appeared, the fox stood paralysed wondering which of the hundred ways was most suitable. The cat had only one choice. It immediately climbed the nearest tree and escaped the terrible fate of the fox!
Make a list of the daily actions you wish to take the night before you need to take them. Visualize yourself performing those actions successfully and celebrate in advance the achievement of your goals. Go to sleep and let your subconscious mind do its work of moving you towards your goals and dreams.
Even if you repeat the same daily actions, the above listing exercise is worth doing. Try it regularly and see if it still makes a difference.
High flyers will need none of the above. They are already flying high but those of us who are not yet flying high need all the help we can get. You have to walk before you run and you have to run before you take off and fly. I hope this article will have made your runway a little smoother!

The two-year old likes to run.
Saturday, December 23, 2006

Source : Unknown

It warms my heart when I see his funny movements as he runs. It also scares me because young children have a tendency to fall very easily.
I was out shopping with my sons when the two-year old started to run.
He fell.
If you are a parent, you completely understand the phrase,"it hurts you more than it does them." There is something that pains worse than physical torment to see your little one hurt. He skinned his knee and elbow. He cried for a few minutes and finally with the soothing of Daddy, quieted down.
We are like my two-year old.
There are so many areas of life where we must run: some by choice, some by the force of circumstances. There are so many new things. There are so many times when our steps are unsure and we are not experienced runners.
The older I get, the more I understand how a Divine Father can let us go through some things and fall. I was tempted to stop my son when I saw him run. I knew that sooner or later, if not that day then one day, he would fall.
I also knew that if he was to ever learn how to run, he must fall, and often I had to watch him do it.
I fell in business several times before I was able to run.
I fell in relationships several times before I had sense enough to stop looking for perfection and know that we all have faults.
Even your second child is reared differently from the first because you learn some things from falling with that first one.
I fell off of my bicycle.I fell off of my motorcycle.I fell on skates (roller and ice).I even choked a few times while learning to swim.
We often fall when learning to run the things of life.
Too often bruises stop us from ever trying to run again. We are afraid that we will slip and get hurt. We are afraid of the pain.
My son runs much better now. I still wince when I see him run on a hard surface but he won't stop running.
At only two, he has one of the keys of life.
He won't stop running just because he fell.
Your bruises will heal, you will get up, and the path will still be there.
Though at times you may not think it so, The Divine Father is still watching over you.
He just knows that he has to let you fall, If you are ever to learn to run.

A Child's Angel
Source : Unknown

To all mother around the globe, i love you....

Once upon a time, there was a child ready to be born. He asked God:"They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"God: "Among the many angels, I chose one especially for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you."Child: "But tell me, here in Heaven, I don't do anything else but sing and smile, and that's enough for me to be happy. Will I be happy there?"God: "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. You will feel your angel's love and be happy."Child: "How am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language that men talk?"God: "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear. With much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."Child: "And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"God: "Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray."Child: "I've heard that on earth there are bad men. Who will protect me?"God: "Your angel will defend you even if it means risking her own life."Child: "But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."God: "Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you."At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard. The child, in a hurry, asked softly:"Oh God, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my angel's name."God: "Your angel's name is of no importance. You will call your angel ... Mommy."

The Window
Wednesday, December 20, 2006
Source : Unknown

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain the fluids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed next to the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the outside world. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm amid flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Unexpectedly, an alien thought entered his head: Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see anything? It didn't seem fair. As the thought fermented, the man felt ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy eroded into resentment and soon turned him sour. He began to brood and found himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window - and that thought now controlled his life.
Late one night, as he lay staring at the ceiling, the man by the window began to cough. He was choking on the fluid in his lungs. The other man watched in the dimly lit room as the struggling man by the window groped for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room, he never moved, never pushed his own button which would have brought the nurse running. In less than five minutes, the coughing and choking stopped, along with the sound of breathing. Now, there was only silence--deathly silence.
The following morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths. When she found the lifeless body of the man by the window, she was saddened and called the hospital attendant to take it away--no words, no fuss. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.

Coming Home

Source : Unknown

"Friends are God's way of taking care of us. If you should die before me, ask if you could bring a friend." - Stone Temple Pilots

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. "Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to bring home with me."
"Sure," they replied, "we'd love to meet him."
"There's something you should know," the son continued, "he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mind and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us."
"I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live." "No, mom and dad, I want him to live with us."
"Son," said the father, "you don't know what you're asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He'll find a way to live on his own."
At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide.
The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn't know, their son had only one arm and one leg.
The parents in this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who are good-looking or fun to have around, but we don't like people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable. We would rather stay away from people who aren't as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are.
Thankfully, there's someone who won't treat us that way. Someone who loves us with an unconditional love that welcomes us into the forever family, regardless of how messed up we are.
Tonight, before you tuck yourself in for the night, say a little prayer that God will give you the strength you need to accept people as they are, and to help us all be more understanding of those who are different from us!!
There's a miracle called Friendship that dwells in the heart. You don't know how it happens or when it gets started but you know the special lift it always brings. And you realize that Friendship is God's most precious gift! Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. Show your friends how much you care.......
